DINING ETIQUETTE
Dining etiquette varies around the world and is influenced by culture, environment, and social customs. Fadi LeSidon a sommelier, hospitality management consultant, and faculty member of Sagesse University explores some common dining etiquette customs that are practiced in different parts of the world.
Knife and fork
In most western countries, the fork is held in the left hand and the knife in the right hand. After cutting the food, the knife is put down on the side of the plate, and the fork is then used in the right hand to eat. In the United States, it is also common to use the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right hand to cut the meat and then switch the fork to the right hand to eat.
Chopsticks are widely used in Asian countries, and the use of fingers is common in some cultures, such as Indian and middle eastern.
All three are considered correct based on culture and environment. Each has its own etiquette style to be followed.
Therefore, whilst a third of the world’s population uses forks and knives to eat, the other third use chopsticks, and the rest use their fingers to eat. In terms of etiquette, all of these practices are correct depending on the culture and environment. Each mode of eating has its own set of etiquette and style to be followed.
Soup
When eating soup, lift the spoon to your mouth, and avoid making noise while eating.
It is considered rude to place your mouth on the edge of the soup bowl to eat it.
The soup is served on a deep plate, and it is impolite to lift the plate to get the last spoon.
If you are not able to eat soup without making noise don’t order it.
Bread and butter
Bread and butter are served on a B&B plate, separate from the main dish. If unavailable, the bread and butter should be placed on the side of the main dish but never on the table. In France, for example, it is considered impolite to split open a baguette to make a sandwich. It is recommended to cut the bread into small pieces and use it to eat the butter.
Casual dress, formal, business lunch, or dinner
Dressing appropriately for an occasion is essential, and the first impression is very important. If you are unsure about the dress code, feel free to ask the host. If you are the host, it is advisable to inform the guests about the dress code.
Conversation
It is essential to have 2-3 subjects in mind for conversation. It is wise to avoid sensitive matters like politics, religion, and gender-related topics, as they are considered sensitive topics. It is advisable to discuss a common interest where everyone can join the discussion. Avoid classic or boring topics.
In conclusion, dining etiquette varies according to culture and social customs. It is essential to understand and follow the customs while dining in different parts of the world. By observing proper etiquette, we show respect and appreciation for the culture and its customs.
