L’ Antidote offers a unique dining experience as we explore the narrative shared by Manal, Karim, and Walid Merhi, siblings who recount their journey of introducing a fresh culinary concept featuring local French ingredients with boundless potential to the vibrant city of Nice.
What led you to choose Nice, France, as the location for L’ Antidote?
Manal, Karim, and I began our journey in the hospitality industry at a young age in Lebanon, exploring various concepts from coffee shops to nightclubs. Manal’s extensive experience in the French hospitality sector, particularly in Paris and later in Nice, played a significant role in our decision. Nice captivated us with its unique blend of French elegance and Mediterranean warmth. We saw an opportunity to bring diversity and quality dining options to the local community.
Throughout my culinary journey, I’ve been honored with several accolades. They include Silver Medals at prestigious international competitions such as the WACS International Young Chef Competition in Johannesburg and Seoul.
Could you describe the concept or theme of your restaurant and what sets it apart?
Located in the prestigious “Carré D’or” area of Nice, Antidote is a Gastro Chic and Cocktail Bar just a short walk from the renowned “Promenade des Anglais.” Surrounded by art galleries, design studios, and corporate firms, our aim is to offer the highest quality products to our discerning clientele throughout the day. The concept of L’ antidote draws inspiration from olive oil, known as the ultimate remedy for various ailments. It symbolizes our desire to create a space where patrons can disconnect and connect with like-minded individuals in a relaxed atmosphere.
The brainchild of a family with a history of olive tree cultivation, L’ Antidote seeks to be a sanctuary for all occasions. Chef Marta Alemany leads the culinary team in crafting a daily-changing three-course lunch menu, showcasing the freshest ingredients sourced from local markets. With a partially open kitchen allowing guests to observe the culinary magic firsthand, the restaurant ensures smooth operations throughout the day, delivering an unforgettable dining experience.
As dusk falls, L’ Antidote transforms into a vibrant cocktail bar, offering a tantalizing array of hors d’oeuvres and expertly crafted drinks. Pre-dinner hours are dedicated to socializing and unwinding, where patrons can indulge in a unique fusion of culinary and cocktail experiences. The bar program, curated by Walid Merhi, and led by Julia Atrak, promises to delight even the most discerning palates. It makes L’ Antidote a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike.
What challenges did you face in introducing a new culinary experience to Nice, and how did you overcome them?
We prioritize openness, actively listening to guests, neighbors, and staff, valuing their feedback to integrate concepts organically. Facing logistical challenges, we navigate legal procedures with guidance. Our approach involves observing market trends, planning measurable campaigns, and adapting to foster acceptance. We believe in improvisation, adaptation, and overcoming obstacles for success.
As an expert, what unique cocktails or beverages do you offer?
Our establishment celebrates the essence of local French products while offering limitless possibilities in our menu. With a focus on authentic French cuisine and wines, we ensure an unparalleled “à la Française” experience. Our cocktail selection, crafted with inspiration from Lebanon and a touch of Nice. It features unique blends like the Oxymel Gimlet and Kiwi Cobber, highlighting native ingredients and French caviar. The liquor cabinet boasts French classics like Cognac and Armagnac, alongside Italian craft products. Located in Nice. We embrace our proximity to Italy and the Mediterranean, offering a global culinary experience with a French twist. Welcome to a world of flavors and sophistication.
Will you incorporate elements of your Lebanese background into the ambiance or menu of your new establishment?
While Lebanese cuisine holds a special place in our hearts, we aim for L’ Antidote to transcend cultural boundaries. Our concept revolves around celebrating quality ingredients, service, and preparation rather than restricting ourselves to a specific nationality. Chef Marta Alemany, with her experience in the French Riviera’s culinary scene, embraces this approach, allowing her creativity to shine through in our “Cuisine Libre” menu.
